The palace of the Arujale-Ojima of Okeluse Kingdom in Ondo State has issued a formal stern warning to the public regarding the disrespectful treatment of its traditional ruler. Oba Oloyede Adekoya Akinghare II, who is currently 22 years old, has reportedly been the target of overly familiar and "demeaning" terms, including "bro" and "blood."
In a statement released on Friday, the monarch’s Chief of Staff, Prince Adefemi Olorunfemi, emphasized that the King’s youth should never be mistaken for a lack of authority. The palace has made it clear that any deviation from traditional protocols will now face "decisive measures."
The palace expressed concern that individuals have been hiding behind the King’s age to bypass traditional etiquette. Prince Olorunfemi clarified that regardless of a person’s status or age, the monarch must be addressed strictly as His Royal Majesty.
"The fact that His Royal Majesty is the youngest king in Yoruba land does not give room for disrespect in any form," the statement read. "Addressing our revered monarch with terms such as ‘bro,’ ‘blood,’ or any casual expressions is highly inappropriate and will no longer be tolerated."
The statement further reminded the public of the spiritual significance of the office, referring to the Oba as Igbakeji awon orisa the representative of the gods on earth.
Oba Akinghare’s journey to the throne is a unique tale of duty and tradition. He ascended the throne of his forefathers at the age of 16 while he was still a secondary school student. As the only son of the late monarch, the responsibility fell on him automatically in accordance with the ancient customs of the Okeluse Kingdom.
Despite his "calm disposition," the palace warns that his leniency should not be exploited. For the people of Okeluse and the wider Yoruba community, the throne remains a sacred symbol of heritage and identity that transcends the age of its occupant.
Official Title: Always use "His Royal Majesty."
Cultural Context: The King is the custodian of tradition, regardless of his biological age.
Consequences: Any further use of slang or disrespectful language will be met with "strong measures."
The Ondo State Government and the local kingmakers have previously expressed their full support for the young monarch, whose selection was fast-tracked to ensure the continuity of the kingdom's leadership.
