BADAGRY, LAGOS – In a poignant display of respect and cultural solidarity, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogundele (popularly known as RAK), visited the Akran’s Palace on Friday, January 16, 2026. The visit was aimed at commiserating with the royal family and the people of Badagry following the transition of the revered monarch, the Akran of Badagry.

The atmosphere at the palace remained solemn as a steady stream of dignitaries and community leaders arrived to pay their final respects. Commissioner Ogundele’s visit highlights the profound impact the monarch had on both the political and social fabric of Lagos State.

Addressing the press, the Commissioner described the late Akran as more than just a traditional ruler, but as a unifying father figure whose influence extended far beyond the borders of his kingdom.

“Oba Akran was a father, leader, and mentor not only to me but to the entire Badagry Kingdom and Nigeria at large,” Ogundele stated. “My coming here today is to pay my respect on his passing and to extend condolences not only as a political figure but as a son of the soil.”

Reflecting on his personal journey, the Commissioner shared sentimental memories of his interactions with the monarch. He recalled receiving royal blessings from the Akran during his previous political aspirations for the House of Representatives, noting that the King’s wisdom and encouragement were pivotal moments in his career. This personal connection underscored the monarch’s role as a pillar of support for the younger generation of leaders in the state.

As the Badagry Kingdom enters a period of mourning and transition, Ogundele emphasized the need for communal stability. He urged the residents of Badagry to honor the monarch’s legacy by remaining peaceful, united, and committed to love. His message served as a call to action for the youth and elders alike to preserve the harmony that the late Akran spent decades fostering.

The transition of the Akran of Badagry marks the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most historic coastal kingdoms. As burial rites and further tributes are expected in the coming days, the visit by the Youth Commissioner reaffirms the state government's commitment to standing with the people of Badagry during this significant period of royal succession.
