The Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) paid an emotional condolence visit to the palace of Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

The visit served as a final tribute to a monarch whose reign was defined by his unwavering support for cultural preservation and the growth of the tourism sector in Lagos State.

Leading the delegation was Dr. Ganiu Sekoni Balogun, popularly known as "Tarzan the Boatman." As a Board of Trustees (BOT) member of the ATPN and the National President of boat operators in Nigeria, Dr. Balogun shared deeply personal reflections on the King’s unique approach to hospitality. He noted that the Akran’s humility often transcended his royal status, creating a welcoming atmosphere for every visitor who stepped onto Badagry’s shores.

"I am missing the King already because of the way he related with tourists," Dr. Balogun remarked during the visit. "You wouldn’t even know he was a King by how friendly and humble he was. When we arrived with visitors, Kabiesi would wait for us at the O2 waterfront to personally receive them. This made the visitors incredibly happy and left a lasting impression of our culture."

Dr. Balogun, a veteran with over 40 years of experience on the Lagos waterways, also used the opportunity to highlight Badagry’s reputation as a secure destination. He emphasized that the peace enjoyed in the kingdom was a testament to the King’s leadership.

"Badagry is one of the safest places in Lagos State. In all my years, I have never heard of kidnappings here. I know these routes so well I could navigate from Lagos to Badagry with my eyes closed," he added.

The visit included the presentation of an official condolence letter signed by Dr. Balogun and Hon. Samson Nunayon Apata, the National Vice President of ATPN (South West Region). The letter lauded the late Akran for a reign that showcased "dedication, wisdom, and a commitment to preserving Badagry’s rich cultural heritage."

The ATPN leadership recognized the monarch’s pivotal role in promoting the iconic Badagry heritage sites, which serve as a cornerstone of Nigeria's historical narrative. By fostering peaceful coexistence and supporting local initiatives, the Akran ensured that Badagry remained a focal point for researchers, historians, and international tourists alike.

The association reaffirmed its dedication to the region, pledging to continue partnering with the Badagry community. The ATPN aims to build upon the foundation laid by the late monarch by promoting cultural tourism and supporting local economic growth. The delegation urged the people of Badagry to remain united and maintain the high standard of service and friendliness that the King championed.

"We pray that the late Akran's legacy inspires continued cultural preservation and community development," the statement read. The ATPN concluded by offering prayers for the royal family and the entire Badagry community, vowing to ensure that the "unique heritage" of the kingdom continues to be showcased to the world.
