BADAGRY, LAGOS – Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a stern warning to the Badagry Royal Council regarding the selection of a successor to the late Aholu Menu Toyi 1. The Governor emphasized that the process must remain transparent, urging kingmakers to resist the urge to manipulate the traditional rites of succession.
The transition follows the passing of the revered Akran of Badagry, who transitioned on Monday, January 12, 2026, after a brief illness. His death has left the ancient coastal town in mourning, marking the end of an era for one of Lagos State's most influential traditional stools.
During a condolence visit to the palace on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Bolaji Robert, addressed the royal family and the council of chiefs. He stressed that the integrity of the selection process is paramount to maintaining the stability of the kingdom.
"I’m appealing to you to do the right thing," the Governor stated. "I want you to see yourselves as one; Badagry is one; you must not allow anything to divide you."
The Governor’s message was clear: the state government expects a seamless transition that honors the legacy of the late monarch rather than one mired in internal politics or external interference.
The late Akran was widely known for his peaceful reign and his ability to unite the diverse interests within the Badagry Local Government Area. Babatunde Hunpe, the Chairman of the Badagry Local Government, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, vowing to uphold the existing peace and strictly follow the state's directives throughout the transition period.
The demise of the Akran has undoubtedly created a "significant vacuum," according to the Governor, but he reassured residents that the state remains committed to the development and security of the region.
Representing the bereaved family, Adesola Akran-Oketunde, the eldest daughter of the late monarch, expressed her gratitude to the state government for their support. She urged the Governor to continue his partnership with the people of Badagry to ensure that her father’s vision for a peaceful and prosperous town remains intact.
