Benin Thwarts Military Mutiny: Loyal Forces Uphold President Talon’s Government

In an early-morning confrontation, Benin’s armed forces successfully neutralized an attempted military coup, preserving the constitutional authority of President Patrice Talon’s administration. The presidency confirmed that loyalist troops have restored order, ensuring the nation’s democratic institutions remain intact.

Interior Minister Alassane Seidou addressed the nation via national television, confirming the crisis had been contained. "In the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, a small group of soldiers launched a mutiny aiming to destabilize the country and its institutions," stated Seidou.

He praised the armed forces' leadership for their fidelity to the republic, noting their "counteraction allowed them to maintain control and thwart the manoeuvre." The government has since urged all citizens to resume normal daily activities without fear.

The failed coup attempt was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Tigri Pascal, who briefly seized national airwaves to declare a takeover. Pascal accused President Talon of mismanagement and announced the suspension of all political activities, alongside the immediate closure of Benin’s land, sea, and air borders. His proclamation cited a "military committee’s" intent to restore national cohesion, but the hold on power proved fleeting.

The U.S. Embassy in Cotonou issued a security alert, confirming it was closely monitoring the volatile situation and advising residents to shelter indoors initially.

This event occurs against a backdrop of regional instability, coming just one week after the overthrow of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló in nearby Guinea-Bissau. Benin’s resistance to a coup attempt marks a significant stance in a West African region recently troubled by military takeovers in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger.

Benin’s swift restoration of order demonstrates the strength of its loyal military forces and provides a contrast to the region’s recent political disruptions. The government’s firm control signals ongoing stability for the nation, even as security concerns continue to challenge neighboring West African states.
