BADAGRY, LAGOS STATE – In a vibrant ceremony steeped in tradition, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, officially presented the staff of office to the newly installed Possu of Badagry, White Cap Chief Sulaiman Sewanu Iroko — Osewekan-Bana I.
The historic event took place on Saturday November 8 2025, at Posukoh Quarters in Badagry Town, Lagos State marking a significant moment for the community's cultural heritage.
The enthronement was a spectacle of royal pageantry, captivating a large audience of indigenes, dignitaries, and well-wishers. The air was filled with the rhythmic beats and colourful displays of traditional masquerades, including the iconic Ajogan, the mysterious Zangbeto, and the expressive Gelede, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the Badagry people.
In his keynote address, Hon. Hunpe heralded the occasion as a pivotal moment for the community. He described it as “a day that history reconnects with heritage, and continuity meets destiny,” emphasizing that the installation signified “a rebirth of pride and identity” for the Posukoh Quarters after a prolonged period without a leader on the Possu stool.
The council chairman expressed strong confidence in the new monarch, praising Chief Iroko as “a young, energetic, and educated son of the soil.” He highlighted that the Possu’s leadership is expected to be “intelligent, forward-looking, and deeply rooted in ancestral values,” a combination poised to drive progress.
Reaffirming his administration's commitment to traditional institutions, Hon. Hunpe detailed concrete steps already taken. “Within our first 100 days in office, we increased the imprest allowance of the Chieftaincy Committee and began developing a structured welfare system for traditional leaders,” he stated.
Linking cultural preservation to economic growth, the chairman noted that “when culture thrives, tourism blossoms.” He pledged his government’s continued partnership with all royal fathers and community leaders to position Badagry as “a hub of cultural excellence and economic opportunity.”
In his acceptance speech, the newly enthroned Possu of Badagry, Chief Sulaiman Sewanu Iroko (Possu-Bana I), extended his gratitude to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for officially approving his appointment. He also thanked the immediate past council chairman, Hon. Onilude Olusegun Adeniran, who presented his appointment letter, and the current chairman, Hon. Hunpe, for presiding over the formal staff of office presentation.
Chief Iroko also acknowledged the leadership and guidance of the Akran of Badagry, His Imperial Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.
Outlining his vision for his reign, the new Possu pledged to rule “with the fear of God, service to humanity, dignity, and integrity.” He issued a heartfelt call for unity among the people of Posukoh, urging them to set aside differences and work collectively for the progress and development
