YOLA, Adamawa State – In a decisive move to uphold discipline, the Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of four of its officers for alleged indiscipline and a serious breach of standard operating procedures (SOP).
The command's spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed the development in an official statement released on Tuesday. The officers are accused of employing excessive force during an arrest operation.
According to the police statement, the incident occurred on October 14 in the Sabon Gari quarters of Fufore Local Government Area (LGA). The detained officers were found to have acted unprofessionally by not only using excessive force but also firing shots into the air to effect the arrest of a suspect.
This action constitutes a clear violation of the Nigeria Police Force's established rules of engagement and standard operating procedures designed to protect citizens and ensure professional conduct.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, was reported to have "frowned upon the unprofessional conduct" displayed by the officers. In a move to reassure the public, CP Morris urged residents to remain calm, emphasizing that "the law will definitely take its course."
To ensure a transparent and comprehensive investigation, CP Morris has directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP’s X-Squad to take over the case. The X-Squad, known for handling matters of internal discipline, is tasked with conducting a "thorough and diligent investigation" into the matter.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts within the Nigeria Police Force to address issues of misconduct and hold its personnel accountable, reinforcing the message that breaches of procedure will not be tolerated.
