PDP Delays NEC Meeting Amid Member Exodus, Governor Urges Hope

By:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has abruptly postponed its high-stakes 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, throwing the party's immediate plans into uncertainty.

The meeting, which was scheduled for Wednesday, was delayed indefinitely by the party's National Working Committee following an emergency session on Monday.

This sudden postponement comes at a critical time for the main opposition party, as it grapples with a wave of high-profile defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The move has sparked significant concerns about the PDP's stability and its ability to mount a strong challenge in the upcoming 2027 general elections, raising questions about the party's internal unity.

Amid the growing crisis, Governor Seyi Makinde attempted to project a message of resilience. Speaking at the inauguration of a PDP National Convention subcommittee in Abuja, the governor urged party faithful not to lose hope. He framed the current challenges as a temporary phase necessary for building a stronger foundation for future victories.

"The news out there is that governors are defecting. I have good news. It may appear that it’s getting worse," Governor Makinde stated. "But usually, when you want something that will endure, it will usually get worse before it gets better." He reminded members that the PDP has been a "constant factor" in Nigerian democracy since 1999, either as the ruling party or the main opposition.

The party's official statement, issued by its spokesman Debo Ologunagba, cited "recent developments" as the reason for the postponement, which was carried out in accordance with the party's constitution. A new date for the pivotal NEC meeting is expected to be announced soon, as the party leadership strategizes to navigate its current political storm.
