Lagos, Nigeria – In a moving tribute to the pillars of the profession, The Journalism Clinic, a leading media training outfit, has honoured veterans for their indelible service to Nigerian journalism.
The ‘Appreciation Day for Nigerian News Media Elders,’ held on Wednesday in Lagos, became a powerful symbol of gratitude and continuity, highlighting the critical role of mentorship in the media landscape.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, served as the keynote speaker and passionately acknowledged the veterans as mentors, role models, and custodians of journalistic excellence. He urged the younger generation of media practitioners to emulate the formidable legacies set by these elders.
Mr. Omotoso noted that while many veterans have retired from active newsroom duties, their influence continues to resonate powerfully across the profession.
“I am proud to say that I am one of the many protegees who have benefited from your mentorship and wisdom in the noble craft of journalism,” Mr. Omotoso stated. He described the event as "profoundly symbolic," celebrating not just the veterans but also the enduring values they represent for those beginning their careers.
The Commissioner described journalism as a calling that demands courage, integrity, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to truth and public service. He expressed his joy that the professional community was recognizing these contributions while the veterans are still alive.
“This appreciation teaches us that journalism at its very core is public trust, one that must always be guided by conscience, fairness, and accuracy,” Mr. Omotoso added. He commended the veterans for inspiring generations of reporters, editors, and broadcasters to approach their craft with both passion and patriotism.
The convener of the event, Taiwo Obe, Founder of The Journalism Clinic, in his welcome address, stressed the need to recognize the critical role Nigerian journalism played in the nation's struggle for sovereignty and the sustenance of its democracy.
Mr. Obe expressed his conviction that media practitioners who have shaped the nation's narrative deserve to be celebrated and appreciated with fanfare.
Adding a poignant perspective, one of the honoured veterans, Mr. Patrick Oke, underscored the profound responsibility of broadcasters and writers. He emphasized that words have significant power to shape lives and influence the mindset of the audience.
Mr. Oke called for a focus on instilling positive values in the younger generation through media content, urging professionals to prioritize "building minds over commercial or entertainment purposes." He advocated for regular forums to remind the youth of their responsibility in shaping society positively.
The event served as a strong reminder of journalism's foundational principles and the importance of preserving its rich legacy for future generations.
