BADAGRY, Lagos – In a move to curb road fatalities, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Badagry has launched a stern campaign against distracted driving, delivering a powerful message to motorists: “Your Phone Can Wait — Your Life Can’t.”

The initiative marks the commencement of the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign, designed to promote greater accountability on the roads during the high-risk festive period.

The Unit Commander of FRSC Badagry, Mr. Yusuf Sanni, officially flagged off the campaign under the theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety — Stop Distracted Driving.” He emphasized that this year’s focus is squarely on eliminating dangerous distractions behind the wheel, with a particular spotlight on the pervasive use of mobile phones and engaging in unnecessary conversations while driving.

Sanni directly linked these behaviours to the majority of road crashes, which he stated are primarily caused by preventable human errors such as speeding, fatigue, and overloading.

Mr. Sanni outlined a strategic shift in the FRSC’s approach for the 2025 campaign. While previous efforts encouraged passengers to speak up against reckless driving, this year’s edition places the burden of responsibility directly on the drivers themselves.

“This year’s edition places direct accountability on drivers to adopt safer habits and avoid risky behaviour,” Sanni stated. To enforce this message, the FRSC will intensify its efforts by deploying more personnel along major highways and strengthening collaborations with driving schools, transport unions, and community leaders to ensure road safety awareness is sustained beyond the campaign period.

Beyond enforcement, the campaign is adopting a multi-faceted, grassroots approach to embed safe driving practices within the community. The FRSC has planned a series of community rallies, town hall meetings, and free vehicle safety checks to directly engage with motorists and address their concerns.

Commander Sanni made a heartfelt appeal to all drivers, urging them to adhere to speed limits, consistently use seat belts, and comply with all traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies. The campaign’s launch culminated in a visible street sensitization march, where FRSC officers, Special Marshals, and transport union members paraded from the FRSC Command office to the Badagry Roundabout and nearby motor parks, distributing flyers and directly educating road users on the critical importance of safe driving throughout the ember months and the upcoming festive season.
