LAGOS, Nigeria – In commemoration of World Tourism Day 2025, the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), South West Region, has said the tourism sector as the next frontier for sustainable economic growth and community development.

The statement was made by the association's National Vice President, Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, in Saturday, September 27, he outlines a comprehensive vision to leverage the region's rich cultural assets to drive entrepreneurship, job creation, and international investment.

Apata emphasized that tourism is a potent "game-changer" for the South West communities. "Tourism has the potential to be a game-changer for our communities, fostering economic growth, promoting cultural exchange, and creating opportunities for entrepreneurship and job creation," he stated.

The ATPN is calling on state governments, private sector leaders, and international development partners to collaborate on policies and investments that will unlock the region's vast, and often untapped, tourism potential. This collaborative approach is seen as critical to building the necessary infrastructure and marketing reach.

"This year's World Tourism Day theme, "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation," resonates deeply with the ATPN's core mission. The association is committed to moving beyond traditional tourism models to champion practices that actively benefit local populations," Apata said.

The focus is on a triple bottom line: economic empowerment for communities, preservation of the region's rich cultural heritage from the ancient palaces of Oyo to the vibrant festivals of Lagos and a firm commitment to environmental conservation, ensuring that natural attractions are protected for future generations.

To translate this vision into reality, the ATPN has laid out a clear, four-point agenda. Firstly, they are celebrating the resilience of local tour operators, hoteliers, and guides who have kept the industry alive.

Secondly, they are making a direct appeal to governments across the South West to prioritize tourism in official policy and budgetary allocations.

Thirdly, they are urging the private sector to invest in sustainable initiatives, from eco-friendly resorts to community-based tourism projects.

Finally, the ATPN has reaffirmed its own commitment to championing practices that ensure local communities are engaged, cultures are preserved, and the environment is respected.

As the global community reflects on the power of travel, the ATPN South West is looking firmly toward the future. The association has expressed its enthusiasm for continuing its work with all stakeholders to build a thriving, sustainable tourism ecosystem. This World Tourism Day 2025 serves not just as a celebration, but as a strategic launchpad for a transformed South West Nigeria, where tourism becomes a leading pillar of a prosperous and sustainable economy for all.
