The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has emphasized the need for a comprehensive rights-based approach to youth empowerment in Nigeria.
In a statement marking 2025 International Youth Day, Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, urged governments at all levels to prioritize job creation, quality education, healthcare access, and leadership training for young Nigerians.
Ojukwu highlighted the importance of protecting youth rights, expanding economic opportunities, and ensuring active participation in governance. He called on the government and stakeholders to support young people in achieving their potential, enabling them to contribute to peacebuilding and national development.
"Young Nigerians are not just beneficiaries—they are innovators, thinkers, and key partners in building a future rooted in equity, dignity, and human rights," he stated.
Despite their resilience and potential, Nigerian youths face serious obstacles, including, Unemployment & underemployment, Limited access to quality education, Lack of mentorship & leadership opportunities, Economic hardship & rising cost of living and Political & economic exclusion.
Ojukwu noted that these challenges have led to frustration and a sense of marginalization among young people, limiting their ability to thrive.
The NHRC reaffirmed its dedication to amplifying youth voices, ensuring their participation in decision-making, and safeguarding their rights in line with national and international human rights standards.
"We must create an enabling environment where youths can actively shape policies and drive sustainable development," Ojukwu stressed.
