Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has called on Akwa Ibom indigenes in the United States to harness their expertise, networks, and resources to promote tourism, investment, and cultural heritage in their home state.

The governor’s message was delivered by Helen Obareki, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, at the 38th Annual Convention of the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria, USA (AKISAN), held at the Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

Governor Eno praised AKISAN for preserving the state’s cultural identity and fostering unity among its diaspora members. He encouraged them to adopt a “backward integration” model similar to successful diaspora communities like the Chinese and Indians by channeling education, technology, and business investments back home.

“How can you bring investments, transfer technology, and use your platforms to promote our state’s rich tourism potential?” he asked. Highlighting untapped opportunities, the governor pointed to Ikot Abasi’s historic castle, ONNA’s pottery industry, and Ikot Ekpene’s raffia craft as major attractions awaiting global recognition.

Governor Eno spotlighted Itawan James, a US-trained professional who returned to Akwa Ibom to develop the Arise Senior Citizens’ Centre, now nearing completion. He challenged other diaspora members to follow her example, emphasizing that skills, investments, and passion can drive transformative change in the state.

In a major reveal, Governor Eno announced plans to host the 2026 AKISAN Convention in Uyo, urging the association to collaborate with the state government for a landmark event. He also fulfilled a $5,000 pledge to the winner of a native dialect competition, reinforcing his commitment to preserving indigenous languages.

The governor unveiled ambitious tourism projects under his administration, including: Arise Resorts, A mini-Disneyland with luxury facilities, 5,000-seater International Conference Centre, Five-star hotel, shopping mall, and hospital.

These developments aim to position Akwa Ibom as a premier destination for business and leisure tourism in Nigeria.

AKISAN President Mbong Ekiko thanked Governor Eno for his consistent support, including sending a five-person delegation to the convention. He assured continued collaboration with the state government to advance the ARISE Agenda and support key development projects.
