Governor Bassey Otu has approved the release of N18 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrade of key tourist destinations.
The initiative aims to reposition the state as a premier travel destination in Nigeria and West Africa, leveraging its rich cultural heritage and natural attractions.
The funds will be channeled into revamping iconic sites such as the Obudu Mountain Resort, Kwa Falls, Marina Resort, and Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort.
According to Thomas Ikpeme, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism Development, the investment is part of the administration’s broader ‘Season of Sweetness’ agenda, designed to enhance visitor experiences and stimulate economic growth.
In addition to upgrading existing facilities, the government plans to remodel the Amber Tinapa Hotel and Studio Tinapa, as well as construct a new pier harbour to boost waterfront tourism.
Ikpeme also revealed plans to introduce ‘Experience Calabar’ guided tours and establish a Heritage Market to showcase local arts, crafts, and cultural products, providing a platform for indigenous entrepreneurs.
A significant portion of the funds will be allocated to the development of Axari Towers, a project aimed at increasing accommodation capacity ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Calabar Carnival in December 2025. The annual carnival, one of Africa’s largest street festivals, attracts thousands of visitors, and the state is working to ensure world-class hospitality services for attendees.
To further support tourism logistics, the Cross River government has acquired two CRJ 1000 aircraft to complement the fleet of Cally Air, the state-owned airline operated in partnership with Aero Contractors and ValueJet. This expansion is expected to improve air connectivity and ease travel for tourists visiting the region.
Meanwhile, the Calabar International Convention Centre and Calabar Cultural Centre are undergoing major upgrades to position the state as a hub for conferences, exhibitions, and business events. Governor Otu emphasized that the initiative is not just about infrastructure but also about job creation, investment opportunities, and cultural preservation.
“This is not just an investment in infrastructure; it is an investment in our people, our culture, and our future,” Governor Otu stated.
