Commissioning of projects in Badagry West |
In a historic event on Thursday, July 24, 2025, the outgoing Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Gbenu Joseph, commissioned five major projects as part of his valedictory ceremony ahead of the handover to the incoming chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Rauf.
The projects, aimed at improving healthcare, education, infrastructure, and governance, mark a significant milestone in the council’s development.
The commissioned projects include the newly constructed Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Bapo, the Boglo Way road project, the renovated Sito Gbethrome Secondary School, the newly constructed Apa Cemetery, and an administrative block and Customary Court at the Council Secretariat. These initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents of Badagry West LCDA.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Gbenu Joseph expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, “The local government is the third tier of government closest to the people. The turnout here today is a testament to our impact.”
He highlighted his recent empowerment program, where 520 beneficiaries received cash grants ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000, reinforcing his dedication to grassroots development. He also credited the Apex Leader of Badagry West, Hon. Bamgbose Joseph, as a key mentor behind his achievements, naming the new Customary Court in his honor.
The Apex Leader of Badagry West, Hon. Bamgbose Joseph, commended Gbenu’s performance, stating, “If given another opportunity, he would do even better.”
He emphasized the economic benefits of Owode-Apa road if constructed, calling for federal government's attention on infrastructure to boost commerce in Badagry. “The situation of this road is a shame on us in Nigeria and Badagry West, it’s the gateway to the international community, but look at the situation compared to that of our neighbouring country Benin Republic.” he added.
The incoming chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Rauf, praised his predecessor’s efforts, promising to surpass his achievements. “Since Gbenu performed at this level, I will do even more,” he said. Rauf outlined plans for youth empowerment, including expanding skill acquisition centers and organizing annual sports tournaments to scout and sponsor talented athletes internationally.
Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, lauded the projects, stating, “In the next eight years, Badagry should be the Miami of Lagos.” He referenced the upcoming Badagry Deep Sea Port as a catalyst for economic growth, urging continued collaboration to maximize benefits for residents.
