The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has issued a security advisory urging American citizens and embassy staff to steer clear of Nigerian military bases and government facilities due to heightened global tensions.
In an official statement released Sunday, the U.S. Mission cited "current global developments" as a key reason for the warning, prohibiting non-essential visits to such locations in Abuja.
"Due to increased security risks, all U.S. embassy personnel and their families are barred from unofficial travel to Nigerian military sites or government venues at this time," the notice stated.
The advisory also urged American expatriates in Nigeria to Stay vigilant in public spaces, especially areas frequented by Westerners and officials. Avoid large crowds and limit non-essential travel. Change daily routines to reduce predictability. Identify emergency exits in buildings and review personal security plans.
This warning follows a deadly Boko Haram suicide bombing in Borno that killed over 20 people last weekend.
It also comes amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions, including recent airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, and ongoing Israel-Iran missile exchanges after an Israeli attack killed top Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists.
