Former President Donald Trump has publicly declared his friendship with billionaire Elon Musk officially over, while issuing a sharp warning of "serious consequences" if Musk financially supports Democratic candidates opposing the GOP’s tax and spending bill.
In a fiery NBC News interview, Trump confirmed the rift but remained vague on potential retaliatory actions stopping short of mentioning investigations or canceled government contracts with Musk’s SpaceX and Starlink.
The feud ignited after Musk blasted Trump’s tax bill as a "disgusting abomination," complicating its passage in Congress. With Republicans holding slim majorities, Musk’s opposition added fuel to the fire even as the bill narrowly cleared the House and now faces Senate scrutiny.
Trump, however, remains confident the bill will pass by July 4, telling NBC: “People who were going to vote for it are now enthusiastically going to vote for it.”
In an apparent bid to de-escalate, Musk deleted several social media posts criticizing Trump including one that hinted at supporting impeachment. Sources close to Musk suggest he may want to repair the relationship, but Trump seems uninterested: “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
Vice President JD Vance, a longtime Trump ally, weighed in on the feud, calling Musk’s criticism a misstep but leaving the door open for reconciliation: “I hope Elon comes back into the fold.”
Musk, the world’s richest man, was a key Trump donor, funneling nearly $300 million into the 2024 campaign. Trump even tapped him to lead **federal cost-cutting efforts, though Musk’s results fell far short of his $2 trillion slashing promise.
