Just days after a foiled suicide bombing at Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja, a deadly explosion has rocked Borno State, claiming nine lives. The blast, which occurred on Saturday at a busy bus stop in Mairari village, was caused by hidden improvised explosive devices (IEDs), according to reports from *Punch Newspaper.
Abdulkarim Lawan, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that the victims were civilians waiting to board vehicles when the planted bombs detonated.
"Terrorists monitoring their movements planted IEDs at the bus stop, killing nine of my constituents in a cowardly attack," Lawan revealed.
This latest violence underscores the resurgence of Boko Haram-linked attacks in Nigeria. Last week, a suicide bomber died while attempting to target Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja a stark reminder of the nation's escalating security crisis.
Amnesty International reports that over 10,217 Nigerians have lost their lives to terrorism and banditry in the past two years alone. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s recent claims of security improvements, attacks like the Mairari bombing expose persistent vulnerabilities.
In his second-anniversary address, Tinubu acknowledged ongoing challenges but highlighted military successes in the northwest, where troops have reclaimed bandit-held territories.
"Our armed forces have restored order in some areas, allowing farmers to return and highways to become safer," he said. "But we remain vigilant—no Nigerian should live in fear."
