A female pedestrian was tragically crushed to death on Sunday after an over-speeding vehicle veered off the road and onto the walkway at Mosalasi Roundabout in Ipaja, Lagos State.

The driver, who attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended and handed over to the police, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s spokesperson, described the incident as "harrowing and unfortunate," revealing that a black Toyota Tundra (registration number FST 222 HV) lost control while speeding, plowed into the pedestrian walkway, and fatally struck the woman.

“Preliminary investigations show the vehicle was moving at an excessive speed before it skidded off the road, hitting the victim who died instantly,” Taofiq stated.

The impact sent the car crashing into a nearby livestock sales outlet, damaging the perimeter fence and an advertising billboard. Witnesses reported that the driver tried to escape but was caught by LASTMA officials.

The suspect has been handed over to the Gowon Estate Police Command, while the victim’s body was transferred to the authorities for further procedures. Police investigations are ongoing.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family. He emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly brake checks, and reminded drivers that obeying traffic laws is not just a legal duty but a moral responsibility to protect lives.
