Free Smokeless Cookstoves & Tree Seedlings for Households – Launching June 30 in Historic Climate Initiative

Makoko, Lagos’ iconic waterfront community, has been chosen as the pilot location for Nigeria’s ambitious 80 million clean cookstove distribution project, marking a major step toward sustainable energy and climate action.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Government in partnership with Greenplinth Africa, kicked off with a live demonstration ahead of its official rollout on June 30.

Makoko, often overlooked in development plans, was intentionally selected as the launchpad for this nationwide scheme. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Climate Change, emphasized that the choice reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive, pro-poor policies.

"Makoko is the first to benefit from this clean energy transition a proud moment for Lagos," she stated. The state will receive 8 million stoves, 10% of Nigeria’s total allocation, distributed across its 57 LGAs and LCDAs.

The new stoves, which use briquettes made from agricultural waste (sawdust, rice husks), eliminate toxic smoke, reducing respiratory illnesses linked to traditional firewood use. Yahya Ahmed, COO of Greenplinth Africa, demonstrated how the stoves operate smoke-free, preventing the chronic coughing and eye irritation common among women in firewood-dependent households. Beyond health, the project will create jobs in briquette production and logistics, while a UN carbon credit scheme ensures the stoves remain free for beneficiaries.

The launch was timed to coincide with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s 60th birthday, aligning with his vision for a legacy-driven, people-focused celebration.

"Instead of a party, the Governor wanted to be present symbolically in communities like Makoko, where real change begins," Oshodi explained. Each recipient will also receive 50 tree seedlings (fruit-bearing and commercial varieties) to combat deforestation and promote sustainable agroforestry.

The event drew grassroots influencers, including legendary musician Daddy Showkey, Afrobeat star Alariwo of Africa, and Nollywood actress Foluke Daramola, who amplified the campaign’s message.

Madam Bidemi, a Makoko resident who tested the stove, praised its speed, safety, and cleanliness. The Baale of Makoko, Orioye Jephter Ogungbure, and local leaders welcomed the initiative as a long-awaited recognition of their community’s role in Lagos’ sustainable future.
