Alaba Rago |
The Lagos State Government has given traders at Alaba Rago Market a 24-hour deadline to clear waste and comply with environmental regulations or risk immediate closure.
Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, issued the stern warning on Sunday after inspecting the market alongside Idi-Araba and Orile-Iganmu.
Last year, Alaba Rago was sealed for similar violations. Now, with traders again blocking drainage systems and dumping waste on roads, Wahab declared: "They have until tomorrow evening to clean up, or we will take decisive action."
During the inspection, Wahab uncovered a cart-pushing syndicate operating in Idi-Araba, flouting Lagos’ waste disposal laws. He vowed to escalate the matter to law enforcement, stating: "We must be proactive in tackling this illegal activity."
The commissioner also assessed drainage issues in Orile-Iganmu, where blocked systems worsen flooding. He directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to clear debris immediately to allow free water flow.
Wahab urged residents to maintain cleanliness during the Sallah festivities, emphasizing collective responsibility in keeping Lagos clean.
With the clock ticking, traders must act fast or face a shutdown. Stay tuned for updates on Lagos’ environmental enforcement drive!
