In a historic and colorful ceremony at the Akran’s Palace, Chief (Dr.) Babatunde Olaide-Mesewaku was bestowed the prestigious chieftaincy title of Awushe of Badagry Kingdom by His Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria.
The event, held as part of the 48th coronation anniversary of the revered monarch, celebrated Dr. Mesewaku’s immense contributions to tourism, cultural preservation, and academic excellence in Nigeria and beyond.
Dr. Olaide-Mesewaku, a distinguished tourism expert, public administrator, and academic, has been a driving force in promoting Badagry’s rich heritage and African cultural identity on the global stage. His groundbreaking work includes:
First PhD holder from the Diaspora and Transnational Studies Programme at the University of Ibadan’s Institute of African Studies.
Author of "Vothuno (The Chief Priest of Badagry)" and other influential publications. Former Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture. President of the African Renaissance Foundation. Co-organizer of the Badagry Diaspora Festival International, a major platform for cultural exchange.
The Awushe of Badagry title is a rare honor, reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the growth and preservation of Badagry’s history and traditions. Dr. Mesewaku’s recognition underscores his lifelong commitment to community development, tourism, and African cultural advocacy.
In his acceptance speech, the newly crowned chief expressed gratitude to the Akran and the people of Badagry, reaffirming his commitment to elevating the kingdom’s global recognition and fostering sustainable tourism initiatives.
