A retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), 63-year-old Charles Atideka, allegedly murdered three people before committing suicide in a violent land dispute.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident to journalists on Thursday in Badagry.
The former officer reportedly shot and killed two family members and another individual on Tuesday. The victims included Richard Atideka and Latevi Atideka from the Yovoyan community, as well as Muji Onilude from the neighboring Gberefu community. The retired DSP and an unidentified accomplice carried out the attack.
David Atideka, a survivor, recounted the horrific event, stating that the killings took place between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. inside the Atideka family compound.
Lagos Police Spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin revealed that the retired officer ingested poison after the murders. He lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The suspect is deceased. After killing three people, he allegedly consumed poison and later died in the hospital. The bodies of the victims and the perpetrator have been moved to the morgue,” Hundeyin stated.
This shocking incident highlights the deadly consequences of unresolved land disputes.
