The Abia State government has announced ambitious plans to establish a brand-new Umuahia City as part of its sweeping transformation agenda.

Information Commissioner Okey Kanu revealed the development during a press briefing on Monday, following the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Umuahia. He emphasized that the project aligns with the government’s comprehensive Urban Renewal Agenda, aimed at modernizing and expanding the state capital.

The SEC has directed the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) to accelerate the creation of the new city, addressing the current city’s limitations in size and infrastructure. This move signals a major step toward enhancing urban living and economic growth in Abia State.

In another key decision, the government has ordered the immediate renovation of the long-neglected Vocational and Skill Acquisition Centre in Mgbarakuma, near Umuahia. The UCDA has been tasked with ensuring the facility becomes operational as soon as possible, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and job creation.

The commissioner also addressed the issue of vandalism of government property, revealing that the facility manager of the Aba Textile Mill and two staff members are currently detained over alleged theft and destruction of equipment. The government has issued a strong warning, stating that anyone caught damaging public assets will face strict legal consequences.

With these initiatives, the Abia State government is pushing forward its vision for sustainable development, urban modernization, and economic revitalization.
