Chief Martin Onovo Reveals Key Strategies for Opposition Victory, Warns Against Recycling Old Politicians

Bola Tinubu, The president of Nigeria.

Chief Martin Onovo, the 2015 Presidential Candidate of the defunct National Conscience Party (NCP), has declared that only unity and a formidable candidate can guarantee victory for Nigeria’s opposition coalition in the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Onovo, a prominent activist and Head of Policy Positions at the Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), emphasized the need for a dynamic leader to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Onovo stressed that the opposition must present a candidate with a clear agenda, strong moral standing, and physical fitness to inspire national confidence.

"The coalition needs somebody with a patriotic vision, mental sharpness, and youthful energy. Recycling old leaders like Atiku Abubakar will only lead to another defeat,"* he warned.

He further urged opposition parties to prioritize unity, strategy, and a compelling agenda to secure a decisive win in 2027.

While analyzing the ruling party’s prospects, Onovo noted that the APC could retain power if President Bola Tinubu successfully addresses Nigeria’s economic crisis and worsening insecurity.

"If Tinubu fixes fuel subsidy fallout, inflation, and security challenges, he might still win in 2027," Onovo admitted. However, he insisted that a united opposition with a fresh, credible candidate could overpower the ruling party.

Though not directly involved in the newly announced opposition coalition, Onovo reaffirmed his commitment to the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), advocating for a leadership that truly represents Nigeria’s aspirations.

The opposition movement gained momentum after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar unveiled a mega coalition, backed by key figures like Peter Obi’s representative, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, ex-SGF Babachir Lawal, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Will 2027 mark a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy? Onovo’s insights suggest the opposition must act decisively—or risk another APC victory.
