Fresh revelations by People Gazette has indicate that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu may be facing a major political crisis after President Bola Tinubu uncovered alleged financial dealings between the governor’s associate, Aisha Achimugu, and opposition leaders Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

According to insider reports, President Tinubu was stunned by a security briefing revealing that funds linked to Sanwo-Olu’s ally had been funneled to the two prominent opposition figures. While the exact amount and timeline remain unclear, investigators are reportedly digging deeper, with more details expected to emerge.

“The president was furious and deeply betrayed upon learning of these transactions,” a high-ranking official disclosed. “He has weathered political schemes before, but this one struck a nerve.”

Attempts to reach spokespersons for Obi and Abubakar for comments were unsuccessful. The unfolding scandal threatens to derail Sanwo-Olu’s tenure in Lagos, strain his relationship with Tinubu, and jeopardize his political ambitions beyond 2027.

Sources reveal that the probe into Achimugu’s financial activities expanded after she was identified as a key figure in moving funds for Sanwo-Olu. Investigators reportedly traced some transactions to the opposition leaders, allegedly made after the 2023 presidential election—possibly to secure Sanwo-Olu’s re-election following Tinubu’s unexpected loss in Lagos.

Obi and Abubakar, who came second and third in the 2023 polls, have been vocal critics of Tinubu’s policies. Analysts suggest that any covert financial support from a ruling party ally could signal deeper political maneuvering.

“Sanwo-Olu should have known the president’s intelligence network would uncover such moves,” another source noted. “Aligning with opposition figures who oppose Tinubu at every turn was a grave miscalculation.”

Sanwo-Olu, initially a low-profile figure in Lagos politics, rose to power in 2019 after Tinubu orchestrated the ouster of then-Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Now, his loyalty is under scrutiny amid allegations of financial impropriety and personal misconduct.

The governor’s aides reportedly fear that his alleged extramarital affair with Achimugu—combined with his role in the controversial impeachment of former Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa—has further angered the presidency.

“He was already on thin ice over the Obasa impeachment fallout,” an anonymous aide revealed. “This new scandal could be the final straw.”

Presidential spokespersons declined to comment, citing the confidentiality of security briefings. Repeated attempts to reach Sanwo-Olu and his team were unsuccessful.

As investigations continue, the Lagos governor’s political survival hangs in the balance, with mounting pressure from both the presidency and public scrutiny.
