The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 7,798 individuals in just two months for offenses related to fake vehicle number plates. This alarming statistic was disclosed by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC in Abuja on Wednesday.

The meeting was convened in response to growing concerns over the widespread use of counterfeit vehicle number plates across the country, a trend that poses serious risks to public safety and national security. The FRSC emphasized its commitment to tackling this issue head-on, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and improved regulations.

In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, in Abuja, it was revealed that Corps Marshal Mohammed sought the National Assembly’s support to strengthen the FRSC’s efforts. He outlined the measures being taken to clamp down on fake vehicle registration numbers, despite facing significant resistance from vehicle owners using such plates.

Mohammed assured the committee of his dedication to enhancing the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Portal, ensuring that no vehicle with fake registration is allowed on Nigerian roads. “The FRSC’s proactive approach has already led to the arrest of 7,798 individuals for number plate-related offenses in just two months,” he stated.

The Corps Marshal also highlighted the alarming rise in number plate-related offenses, with many motorists flouting the law by using fake or unauthorized plates. He warned that this trend not only undermines road safety but also poses a major security risk, as it complicates efforts by security agencies to track and identify vehicles involved in criminal activities.

Mohammed expressed gratitude for the National Assembly’s support, describing it as a crucial step in the fight against fake number plates. He called for stronger laws and regulations to ensure offenders are held accountable and urged Nigerians to support the FRSC by obtaining genuine number plates and reporting counterfeit ones to the nearest FRSC command.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, Honorable Abiodun Adesida, commended the FRSC’s efforts and pledged the National Assembly’s continued support. He described the ongoing crackdown as a necessary and timely intervention to safeguard public safety and national security.

The FRSC’s aggressive campaign against fake number plates underscores its commitment to ensuring safer roads and enhancing national security. With the support of the National Assembly and the cooperation of the public, the Corps aims to eliminate this dangerous trend and create a safer environment for all road users.
