Students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, in Ikot Ekpene, took to the streets on Monday to protest against alleged police brutality, extortion, and rising insecurity within their school community.

The demonstration, led by the Student Union President, Geoffrey George, saw students carrying placards with bold messages such as “End Police Brutality Now,” “Protect, Save, Don’t Abuse,” and “This Extortion Must Stop.”

The protest highlighted the growing frustration among students over the alleged misconduct of police officers in the area. Speaking to journalists, Mr. George expressed concerns about the presence of hoodlums and petty criminals around the school, accusing the police of exacerbating the situation rather than ensuring safety.

“Instead of providing security, the activities of the police have heightened fear among students,” George stated. He further alleged that students of the polytechnic are routinely abused, extorted, and harassed by law enforcement officers. “Recently, a video went viral on social media showing a student being beaten and dragged on the ground by policemen. This is unacceptable,” he added.

George also pointed out the dangers faced by students living off-campus, particularly in nearby communities. “Hoodlums snatch phones from students and attack them with weapons. We cannot continue to live in fear,” he emphasized.

In response to the protest, DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom, confirmed that the students’ leadership had been invited to a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, to address their grievances. “The Commissioner has called for a dialogue to resolve the issues raised by the students,” she stated.

The protest underscores the urgent need for improved security and accountability within the school environment. As students continue to demand justice and protection, the outcome of the planned meeting between the students and police authorities remains highly anticipated.
