Two days after claiming that the burden of petrol prices had forced it into over $6 billion debt, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Limited, raised its fuel pump price from N617 to N897 per litre on Tuesday morning.
This is a more than 45% increase.
Checks at NNPC retail stations in Abuja showed the new fuel price.
When contacted by Vanguard, Mr Olufemi Soneye, the company's Chief Communications Officer, stated that he was unaware of any pricing increases.
"I am not aware of this. Thank you for reaching out. I have no comments on the subject at this time.
"If there are any updates, I will make sure to notify you. "I appreciate your understanding," he replied via WhatsApp.
An unsubstantiated trending message on social media networks has previously hinted to the new fuel prices.
The message read: "Good morning, everyone. This is to tell you that NNPC Retail Management has approved an increase in PMS pump price from N617/litre to N897/litre beginning today, September 3rd, 2024.
"Please ensure that all of your pumps, totems (price boards), and MIDs reflect the new PMS price of N897 per litre. Thank you."
