No leadership vacuum in Lagos Labour Party - Chairman Dayo Ekong

By: Manoah Kikekon

Dr. Dayo Ekong, the Labour Party chairman Lagos State chapter, has come out to  state categorically that there is no leadership vacuum in the state as her structure still remains legitimate.

The chairman disclosed this on Wednesday at the press briefing held at the Labour Party State Secretary, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Ekong said contrary to what people are saying, it is only the national working committee or the law court that has the right to remove the current caretaker committee and that none of these bodies has made such statements.

"There is no vacuum in the leadership of Labour Party in Lagos State. There are only two institutions that can sack the leadership of the party in the state since we are on caretaker status.

"The first is the National working committee of the party, who is the appointing authority in the first place, and the second is through a pronouncement by a law court of competent jurisdiction.

"At the moment, none of these bodies has made any declaration to that effect and until then, I and my team remain the authentic leadership of the party in Lagos State, and we will continue to show exemplary leadership to our great party", The chairman said.

Ekong pointed out that the Labour Party is not happy about the actions of Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, the House of Representatives Member representing Ojo Federal Constituency, as he continues to label Ekong's administration as illegitimate.

"This Hon. member has taken it upon himself to intentionally misinform the general public and malign my leadership of the party through deliberate falsehoods, especially with the real issues happening in the party. It is esential that we categorically refute and debunk his baseless and misleading narratives for the interest of our party members and supporters.

"Having addressed the issue of tenure ship above, it is therefore laughable and unfounded for Hon. Seyi Sowunmi to tag our leadership as an "impostor" It is regrettable that the person making the assertion is someone who merely rode on the pularity of our principal in the person of His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, and the effort of hard-working members of the party in Ojo Local Government to get to his present position. These are unfortunately the same people he wants to destroy politically.

"This same incompetent politician also erroneously claimed to be a former chairman of the party in the State. We challenge him to make his letter of appointment from the party public. The truth is that he was merely proposed for the position but was later rejected owing to his incompetency and inexperience.

"The leadership of the Labour Party in Lagos State is aware of the dangerous plans of Hon. Seyi Sowunmi to hijack the party in Ojo Local Government Area, which he intends to use as a bargaining chip in his negotiations with the ruling party because he is afraid of the reality of internal democracy in the party, which he feels will not guarantee him a return ticket come 2027.

"The only option left for him is to destabilize the party and move to APC, where he will be imposed on the people to continue their "snatching, grabbing and running away" strategy. We are fully in possession of all the evidences of his nocturnal meetings, which he has been having with them. We are going to make them public at the appropriate period.

"We want to use this opportunity to let all members of our great party and also Nigerians to know that our party is and cannot be built around any single individual, no matter how highly placed. Our strength lies in the collective contributions of our diverse members, drawn from all strata of the society. Labour Party is for all Nigerians, irrespective of class, gender, religion, or ethnicity." She added.
