The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicts thunderstorms and rain across the country from Sunday to Tuesday.

NiMet's weather forecast, issued on Saturday, predicts thunderstorms in Borno, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe states in the northern area throughout Sunday morning hours.

The agency predicts thunderstorms in most sections of the region during the afternoon and nighttime hours.

"Thunderstorms with rain are forecast over sections of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States in the morning.

"Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are forecast throughout the region. Cloudy skies are forecast across southern cities in the morning, followed by sporadic rain over much of the region later in the day," it stated.

Thunderstorms are likely to hit areas of Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe, and Jigawa states on Monday morning, with the northern region following later in the day.

NiMet projected morning thunderstorms and rain in sections of the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara states.

It predicted thunderstorms in areas of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Niger States later in the day, with cloudy sky in the south.

NiMet predicted sporadic rain over much of the region during the afternoon and nighttime hours.

"Thunderstorms are likely to occur in the northern states of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna on Tuesday morning.

"Cloudy skies are expected over the region later today.

"Thunderstorms with rain are expected in the North Central area over parts of Niger and Kwara states in the morning.

"Thunderstorms with rain are forecast to hit sections of Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue States in the afternoon and evening. "Intermittent rain is expected over the southern region throughout the day," it stated.

The agency warned people to stay away from regions that are prone to flooding because heavy downpours can create urban flooding in large cities, and strong winds can precede rain in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur.

The public was also encouraged to heed safety advisories issued by pertinent authorities and to check NiMet's website (www.nimet.gov.ng) for weather updates.

In order to effectively plan their operations, the agency recommended airline operators to get weather information (flight documentation) particular to each airport from NiMet.
