The Customs Area Controller, Seme Border Command Compt. Timi Bomodi, has replied Hon. Setonji David, House Assembly Member Badagry Constituency II, what he said had not happened in recent times as it is just societal media vandi.
He disclosed this to News Peddlers on Wednesday in an interview at the decoration of officers who were promoted to various ranks at the ECOWAS joint border post, Seme-krake border.
According to a News Peddlers report, Hon. Setonji David on Tuesday had asked if it was a crime to live in Badagry as a result of the unlawful activities of the Customs officers on the Lagos-Badagry expressway.
"Is it a crime to live in Badagry? I don't know how coconuts are now contraband. The Comptroller should direct the Coordinator, Border Drill Operations Team, Zone A Ikeja, to release, with immediate effects, the seized trucks and pickup loaded with about 1,450 bags of locally sourced coconut to my people. It is not a crime to live in Badagry," Setonji said.
The Comptroller said, "We realised that this happened in 2019, and some people were rehashing that. We spoke with the border drill command, and it was confirmed that there was no incident like that in recent time; it was an incident that happened in 2019, and as you know, social media is a place where people Vandi information,"
The seizure of the said goods took place at the Agbara Customs Point after it had left the popular Agbalata Central Coconut Market beside the Customs base in Badagry. Setonji said, "Is it a crime to live in Badagry? I don't know how coconuts are not contrabands. The Comptroller should direct the Coordinator, Border Drill Operations Team, Zone A Ikeja, to release with immediate effects the seized trucks and pickup loaded with about 1,450 bags of locally sourced coconut to my people."
"It is a good thing you are bringing it up because we need to re-emphasise that nothing like that has happened in recent time that happened in 2019. We are always speaking to our officers, as there are certain things that should be prevented from happening, but there are certain things, especially legal trade, both internationally and across the border, which we help to facilitate. This is something that happened over 4 years ago, and we will make sure it doesn't happen again," Compt. Timi added
