On Monday, another 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan, bringing the government's death toll from Saturday's quake to over 2,000.

The latest shocks were confirmed by the US Geological Survey and the residents.

"It was quite intense," a doctor in the neighbourhood told dpa of Monday's quake. "People took shelter in parks, open spaces, and gardens."

The fatal earthquake on Saturday, according to the health worker, has had a significant impact on people's mental health.

"Most of the patients are those who have mental shocks," he said.

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Herat province's Zindah Jan area over the weekend devastated at least 13 communities.

Rescue teams and residents from nearby neighbourhoods were still attempting to recover bodies from beneath the rubble.

People are collecting donations for the victims in numerous provinces.

Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan have all vowed to give immediate humanitarian help.

The exact number of casualties is unknown, according to various reports.

So far, the government has reported 2,053 deaths and nearly 1,200 injuries.

The UN Coordination Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported 1,023 deaths and 1,663 injuries, with more than 11,000 people affected by the disaster.
