Former President Olusegun Obasanjo advised leaders at all levels on Friday to embrace democracy as a means of promoting wealth, poverty eradication, job creation, and appropriate security for the good of Nigeria.

Mr. Obasanjo gave the charge in Oyo at the inauguration of the 34.8-kilometer-long Oyo-Iseyin Road Rehabilitation Project.

A democracy that fosters poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, according to the former president, should be abandoned since it only characterises backwardness.

He underlined the necessity of planting specialised crops that would set Oyo apart from others, noting that the state had previously been known as a cassava farming centre.

The former president asked the state to embrace the production of one additional important crop to assist food security initiatives.

Mr. Obasanjo emphasised the significance of good road networks. He praised Governor Seyi Makinde's foresight in restoration, renovation, and construction of roadways connecting the state's five zones.

He stated that such projects will hasten socioeconomic development across the zones and asked locals to assist Mr Makinde's government in its efforts to boost the state's economy.

Mr Makinde stated in his welcoming address that the repair of the Oyo-Iseyin Road and other ongoing road projects were in accordance with his administration's objective of connecting all five zones in the state and reducing rural-urban migration.

He committed to expedite the completion of all active road projects and to restore all internal routes.

The reconstructed Oyo-Iseyin Road was awarded to Kopek Construction Limited in 2021 for N8.4 billion.
