Five individuals were reported dead and 12 others were injured in an accident at the Foursquare Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway, On Sunday.

In an interview with reporters in Abeokuta, Florence Okpe, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, verified the incident.

The accident was alleged to have involved a DAF truck with the registration number KMC 810 ZB, a Toyota bus with the registration number TMA-244b XA, and a Mitsubishi pickup van with no registration number.

According to an FRSC spokeswoman, the collision happened about 6:15 a.m. and was caused by excessive driving, tyre blowouts, and the truck driver's loss of control.

She stated that the truck fell and obstructed the road owing to a tyre rupture and loss of control, and that both the bus and the pickup van crashed into the fallen truck.

Ms Okpe revealed that 21 people were involved in the several crashes, with 12 injured and five killed.

The injured were transferred to Victory Hospital in Ogere, near Abeokuta, for treatment, while the deceased were placed in a mortuary in Ipara, also near Abeokuta.

Ms Okpe cited the FRSC's Ogun State Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, as warning motorists to avoid using substandard tyres and to drive with caution during the rainy season.

The sector commander expressed sympathy to the victims' families and advised them to visit the FRSC's Ogunmakin Unit for additional information on the incident.
