Ten officers have been arrested for setting up illegal roadblocks along the Badagry/Seme Border Highway.
According to police sources, the arrest was made by detectives assigned to the Zonal X-squad Zone 2, Onikan Lagos, in response to a series of complaints filed by Nigerians on the conduct of security agents, particularly police personnel, to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone 2, Muhammed Ari Ali.
Ali, speaking to reporters on Monday, bemoaned the unfathomable hardships that Nigerians, particularly businesspeople, had endured at the hands of officers at various checkpoints.
He said: “When I assumed office as the AIG here, I was inundated with complaints of the activities of security agents mounting illegal checkpoints for the purpose of extortion.
“So, we set up a team of detectives from the Zonal X-squad to investigate and report back. I can authoritatively tell you that over 10 police officers have been arrested and are being detained for necessary disciplinary action. One funny thing about these people is that most of them are not serving police officers either at the border or in Badagry.
“They just go there, mount road blocks and start collecting money from travellers and businessmen doing their legitimate businesses. We have a way of dealing with them internally. The raid exercise was going to be sustained because the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, has met with the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, on how to collaborate and checkmate the menace on that route.”
