The All Progressives Congress has criticized Amnesty International for sounding the alarm about ongoing killings in Nigeria, asserting that 20,000 people were murdered in America in just five months.

As of Thursday noon, 19,411 deaths in America were directly related to gun violence, according to Peoples Gazette. Over 10,956 of those deaths—out of that total—were caused by suicide. The number of homicides, murders, unintentional shootings, and defensive gun use totaled 8,450.

Amnesty International decried the widespread killings that have occurred since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29 and put the death toll in Plateau, Benue, Sokoto, and Zamfara at over 120.

In a statement dated June 14 that was distributed by Bayo Onanuga, a supporter of Mr. Tinubu, APC spokesman Felix Morka accused Amnesty International of hypocrisy.

Amnesty International should allow this government to do its work without their usual condescending hypocrisy. It is, therefore, uncharitable and inconsiderate of Amnesty International, through its acting Nigeria Country Director, Isa Sanusi, to accuse the new government that is just settling down of dereliction of duty,” the ruling party’s statement said.

The APC added, “Many nations in the world, including the United States of America, are today bedevilled by insecurity. By the end of May 2023, almost 20,000 people have died cumulatively as a result of gun violence and other violent crimes in America. In the first 150 days of 2023, America has recorded 263 mass shootings, with hundreds of death, yet Amnesty International has not been on the mountain top to accuse the U.S. government of dereliction of duty.”

Amnesty International is allegedly known for inciting civil unrest and racial tension in developing countries by weaponizing and exaggerating local circumstances in order to further its nefarious goals, while hypocritically turning a blind eye when comparable incidents take place in developed countries, particularly in the Western world.

According to the Peoples Gazette, during Mr. Tinubu's first week in office, at least 80 people were killed nationwide in various attacks by bandits and gunmen.

Mr. Tinubu has not yet chosen a spokesperson and has not addressed the killings that have occurred while he has been in office.

The president stated that the government's top priority is security in his inaugural address.

Security shall be the top priority of our administration because neither prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity and violence. To effectively tackle this menace, we shall reform both our security doctrine and its architecture,” Mr Tinubu said.
