Peter Obi and Lai Mohammed |
According to information minister Lai Mohammed, Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the February 25 election, has failed to publicly condemn his running mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed's "treasonable utterances."
This was stated by the minister on Wednesday in London in response to calls for his arrest and prosecution.
Edwin Clark, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), had called for Mr Mohammed's arrest for spreading "fake news" about Mr Obi.
However, the minister insisted that his remarks about Messrs Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed were not false.
"What will be my offence?" said Mohammed. Is it by slamming the Labour Party's vice presidential candidate, who said on live television that if President-elect Bola Tinubu is sworn in on May 29, Nigeria's democracy will be over?"
"Is it for chastising him for saying that swearing in Tinubu on May 29 is like swearing in the military?" the minister continued. What's the point of that?"
He emphasised that Mr Datti Baba-Ahmed had not denied his "treasonous" remark, and that Mr Obi had failed to publicly condemn Mr Datti Baba-Ahmed's objectionable remark.
"The law states unequivocally that anyone who is dissatisfied with election results should go to court." "It is not to begin threatening Nigerians and inflaming the political atmosphere simply because you lost an election," the minister explained.
Mr Mohammed insisted that the APC won the presidential election "fair and square," and that INEC was correct to declare Mr Tinubu the winner.
He assuaged Nigerians and the international community by stating that the president-elect would be sworn in on May 29.
