Commercial sex worker |
Oni Samuel, a middle-aged man, has been charged with defrauding a sex worker in a Magistrates' Court in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
The defendant was arraigned in court on Thursday after being apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The prosecutor, David Ebiriku, who read the charge sheets, stated that Mr Samuel committed a two-count offence involving conspiracy and stealing.
"That you, Oni Samuel "M," and others at large conspired with yourselves on 1 March 2023 at Alagbaka, Akure within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court to commit a criminal offence, to wit (sic) stole a sum of One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira of Mrs.
"Blessing Olaitan thus committed an offence in violation of and punishable by Section 516 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 37, Vol 1 Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
"That you, Oni Samuel, did steal a sum of One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira from Mrs. Blessing Olaitan on the 1st day of March 2023 at Alagbaka, Akure within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 37, Vol 1 Laws of Ondo State, 2006."
He, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Ms Olaitan, who appeared in court as a witness, told the magistrate that she is a professional sex hawker.
She described how she met Mr Samuel a few days ago and how they agreed to "hook up" for a night for N15,000.
According to her, the defendant also allegedly collected N80,000 cash shortly after going to bed with the promise of transferring both funds to her.
Mr Samuel sent her a fake alert, which was discovered a few hours later.
Speaking in court, defence counsel E.O Nifemi asked the court to grant his client bail, but the prosecutor, Mr Ebiriku, objected and asked that he be remanded.
Mr Ebiriku said the defendant could jump bail if he is granted thereby serving a risk to society.
In his decision, Magistrate Tope Aladejana granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the same amount.
He did, however, adjourned the case until April 17, 2023, for further proceedings.
