On Thursday, five people were burned beyond recognition and three others were injured in a fatal accident on the Badagry-Seme Expressway in Lagos.
Sulaiman Taiwo, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Badagry, confirmed the accident.
The accident happened on the expressway near Akoro Village.
A Honda Pilot SUV with the registration number LSR 772 HE and an unidentified motorcycle were involved in the accident.
Taiwo believes the Honda Pilot's driver was speeding and lost control before colliding with the petrol-laden motorcycle.
"The SUV's driver collided with the motorcycle, causing an explosion.
"By the time we got to the scene, the raging fire had burnt three persons beyond recognition, while two others lost their lives during the rescue operation.
"Three people who survived the inferno were taken to the General Hospital in Badagry, while the five corpses were deposited at the same hospital's mortuary," he said.
The prompt response of personnel from the Customs Service, Fire Brigade, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the police, according to Taiwo, restored normalcy to the area.
Dr. Olatunde Bakare, Medical Director of General Hospital, Badagry, said that some relatives of the deceased had reported claiming the bodies, while the three survivors were being treated at the hospital's Emergency Unit.
He urged motorists and other road users to stop transporting petrol in jerry cans in their vehicles, citing the alarming rate at which the hospital was treating victims of fires.
