Rochas Okorocha, founder of the Rochas Foundation and former governor of Imo State, has launched a Teach a Child/Sponsor a Child Project with the goal of enrolling one million out-of-school children.

Okorocha made this known at the project's unveiling in Abuja on Tuesday, according to a statement made available to our correspondent by the foundation on Wednesday.

During the event, the former governor stated that the country owed it to every Nigerian child and unborn child the right education for their liberation.

"In Africa, there are over 50 million out-of-school children, with Nigeria accounting for 13.5 million of this total; if we have one million people who can actually teach, we can eliminate this figure."

As a result, he stated that the project would be a mentoring and volunteering programme that would return all out-of-school children to school by 2050.

Meanwhile, Uchechi Rochas, the foundation's Director-General, stated that the greatest investment any nation could make was in people to make other sectors productive.

Rochas stated that the TAC-SAC project would enlist the participation of stakeholders from all sectors in order to combat the out-of-school children problem.

"As a nation, we have lost the spirit of volunteerism, which has resulted in approximately 13.5 million children not attending school.

"An uneducated child is one who arrived at your door for a robbery attack; an uneducated child is one who is used for terrorism."

The country's entre problem can be solved through education, because empowering these 13.5 million children also empowers 13.5 million families.

"When you look at these figures, female children make up a large portion of them. As a result, it is critical that we get the children into the classrooms because empowering the girl child empowers the nation," she said.
