Trump Vows to Return as US Prepare for Midterm Election

Candidates and big-name backers have made their final appeals to voters in the final hours of campaigning in the United States for the midterm elections, with Republicans excited about the prospect of regaining control of Congress and President Joe Biden insisting his party could spring a surprise.

Democrats argue that Republican victories could profoundly and negatively reshape the country, eliminating abortion rights nationwide and unleashing broad threats to the future of democracy in the United States. Republicans claim that the public is tired of Biden's policies in the face of rising prices and crime concerns.

"We are at a crossroads today. We know in our bones that our democracy is under attack, and we know that now is the time to defend it," Biden told a cheering crowd in Maryland, where Democrats have one of their best chances to reclaim a Republican-held governor's seat. "I want you to know that we'll meet right now."

When he returned to the White House a short time later, Biden was more candid, saying, "I think we'll win the Senate." I believe the House is tougher. When asked about the reality of governing, he said, "More difficult."

Nonpartisan election forecasters predict that Republicans will gain about 25 seats in the 435-seat House of Representatives, which will be more than enough to give them a majority. Analysts believe the party could also gain the one seat required to take control of the Senate, the upper house.

Speaking from Washington, DC, Al Jazeera's reporter said such a result could be "cataclysmic" for Democrats and, in particular, Biden over his next two years in office.

"The Democrats have very little good news," Fisher said.

Dozens of Republican candidates, some of whom could be elected as governors or election administrators in key states, have also echoed and amplified Trump's baseless claims of election fraud in his 2020 defeat.

The reality-show star turned politician has hinted several times that he may run for president again in 2024. Trump said at a rally for Republican candidates in Ohio that he would make an announcement at his Florida estate a week after the election.

"On Tuesday, November 15 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, I'll be making a very big announcement," he told the crowd.
