The First Lady of Nigeria Aisha Buhari and Aminu Adamu Muhammed |
The Nigerian Police have secretly arraigned Aminu Muhammed, a student at the Federal University Dutse, in an Abuja high court, obtaining a remand order against him for his remarks that first lady Aisha Buhari feeds fat on the money of the masses.
Mr Muhammed was secretly arraigned before the FCT High Court on Tuesday, contrary to the police's earlier statement that he would be arraigned on Wednesday, according to the Daily Nigerian.
It is unclear whether the student was given legal representation in court, but his uncle, Shehu Baba-Azare, described his trial as a "secret arraignment," according to the newspaper.
"It's obviously a secret arraignment because they didn't notify us. We are deeply concerned about his predicament. On December 5, he will take his final exam," Mr Baba-Azare said.
Last Saturday, People Gazette reported that the State Security Service unlawfully arrested and detained Mr Muhammed for criticising Mr Buhari.
Mrs. Buhari has been chastised for illegally imprisoning Mr Muhammed, with many Nigerians and human rights organisations demanding his unconditional release.
Mrs. Buhari and her media aides have remained silent on this development since it was first reported.
Amnesty International chastised Mrs Buhari and the SSS on Sunday for illegally imprisoning Mr Muhammed and demanded his immediate release.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemned Mr Muhammed's detention by the SSS on Mrs Buhari's orders in a tweet:
"It is petty, absurd, and unconstitutional for the SSS to arrest a citizen for "mocking" the President's wife on social media."
"Nigeria is not the same as Iran, North Korea, or China. We will not tolerate such blatant abuse of power." Anyone with information about the young man should contact Mr Effiong.
