On Thursday, British Airways flight 83 from London Heathrow to Abuja abruptly landed in Lagos instead of continuing its journey to Abuja due to fears of a terror attack in the country's capital.
According to Flightradar, the flight changed course upon entering Nigerian airspace on Friday morning.
Some passengers on the plane complained that the flight was abruptly diverted to Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, despite receiving advance notice via email.
Olufemi Ojo, a passenger on the plane, described it as a "horrible experience" after their flight was delayed after landing at the airport without prior notice.
He stated that when they arrived in Nigeria on Thursday, passengers were informed that the flight would be landing in Lagos before continuing on to Abuja.
Mr. Ojo claimed that passengers had to wait for more than an hour at the Lagos airport and accused British Airways of being "unapologetic."
"On our way from London to Abuja, we had a terrible experience. The flight was delayed, we didn't leave until 11:45 a.m., and then we got an email saying we're bringing us to Lagos for a 90-minute wait," Mr. Ojo added. "We arrived in Lagos and waited for more than an hour. Unapologetic British Airways asked everyone to come down."
A British Airways spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the development.
Mr. Ojo stated that passengers were still waiting for British Airways to change their crew so they could continue their journey.
"We're done now, and we're supposed to go to Abuja, but they said they needed to change crew, so we're still waiting. This is terrible for British Airways," the traveller added. "We now have a better understanding that Air Peace cannot fly British passengers to London and then land in Manchester. It's a dreadful experience. We've arrived at Muritala Muhammed Airport without an air conditioner, as is customary in Nigeria."
Meanwhile, the UK government has advised its citizens to avoid Abuja due to the possibility of terrorist attacks.
