5G is Safe For Everyone in Nigeria - NCC

The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has assured the public that the new Fifth Generation network, also known as 5G, will not harm their health.

Ogbonnaya Ugama, the NCC's Enugu Zonal Controller, made the clarification in Enugu on Saturday during a round table discussion with members of the Association of Heads of Federal Establishments (AHFEs).

Mr. Ugama stated that there was no convincing evidence that emissions from electromagnetic devices, such as cellphones, were harmful to the body.

According to him, international bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) have established a threshold of no solid evidence that 5G causes negative health effects in humans and animals.

However, the controller advised users not to hold these electromagnetic devices, such as cellphones, too close to their bodies if they had any doubts.

"The NCC will do everything possible to ensure the safety of the citizens and the approval of all equipment that meets set standards," he said.

Mr. Ugama emphasized the benefits of the 5G network, stating that it was designed to increase speed, reduce latency, and improve wireless service flexibility.

"5G has a theoretical peak speed of 20 Gigabytes per Second (GBPS), whereas 4G has a peak speed of one GBPS."

"5G has the potential to transform Nigeria's economy," he said, citing its projected impact in education, finance, security, agriculture, healthcare, entertainment, and even governance.

Nigeria was revealed to be the third country by the controller.
