The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to working with the police and other security agencies to ensure maximum security and peaceful general elections in 2023.
Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shuaib, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division Nigerian Army, stated this during a courtesy visit to Borno Police Commissioner Abdu Umar on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
He stated that greater cooperation among the military, police, and other security agencies would ensure maximum security before, during, and after the general elections.
The GOC stated that the visit would allow him to clear the air about the police's readiness to address security challenges during the elections.
"The police are the lead agency, but due to the peculiar nature of the North-East, it is necessary for the military to provide the lead in various operations." Election violence can occur before, during, or after the elections, and both agencies will be involved in addressing these issues," Mr Shuaib stated.
"As the campaign has already begun, the joint security normally conducts operations to ensure that the metropolis is safe," he added. We want to ensure and reinforce all of our forces, including hybrid forces, so that we have a very secure environment in Maiduguri."
Many intelligence reports "have been coming up," he explained, and "it's only when we work together that things will be pinned down."
Mr Abdu stated that the police would continue to work with the military to protect lives and property in Borno, and that the command had increased patrols in Maiduguri in collaboration with hybrid forces to combat crime.
The police chief reiterated the department's commitment to providing security to ensure free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections.
