Tukur Mamu |
The Department of State Services (DSS) says the outcome of the investigation into bandits' negotiator Tukur Mamu is mind-blowing, and warns the public not to say anything else about it.
According to a statement issued by DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya on Sunday, the Service will not be distracted by comments about Mamu's arrest.
"The Department of State Services (DSS) has closely monitored overzealous public comments in light of issues relating to Tukur Mamu's arrest and investigation," the statement said.
"The Service wishes to avoid being distracted by some of the distorted narratives that pervade the media space.
Instead, it asks to be left alone so that it can focus on the ongoing investigations, the results of which have been astounding. "Meanwhile, the Service will refrain from making further comments on the subject because the Court will decide its fate. As a result, the public is hereby advised to refrain from making unguarded statements while the court proceedings are ongoing."
The DSS comment comes just hours after cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi asked the Service to either charge or release Desert Herald publisher Mamu following his arrest in Cairo, Egypt.
Gumi told the DSS during his weekly sermon at the Sultan Bello Mosque on Saturday that keeping his aide in custody is intimidating to his family.
Prior to Gumi's comment, the DSS claimed that its operatives raided Mamu's home and office and discovered incriminating materials such as military accoutrements and large amounts of various currencies, which the publisher's family denied.
Mamu is a key negotiator for the release of victims of the Kaduna State train attack. The newspaper publisher has recently received attention for his role in the release of victims of the March 28 train attack who were kidnapped by terrorists. However, in August, he resigned as the lead negotiator in securing the release of the remaining victims, claiming that the Nigerian government had threatened his life.
