On Wednesday, the House of Representatives stepped down a motion that will prohibit touts from behaving badly on the country's major highways.
The motion came after Rep. Lanre Edun (APC-Ogun) proposed it in plenary.
"Need to Curb the Incessant and Unruly Behaviour of Touts Operating on Major Highways in Nigeria," the motion says.
Mr Edun stated that he would be withdrawing the motion due to the need for extensive consultation, adding that such consultation was required to take the right step.
The motion noted an increase in the number of touts and their illegal activities on major highways.
He expressed concern that the touts had recently expanded their operations by setting up shop at various highway rest stops and bus stops.
This, he claims, is to extort money from commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle operators.
He claimed that most touts were under the influence of alcohol and hard drugs and frequently resorted to violence when interacting with transport operators and private car users at bus stops and highways.
However, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, asked the lawmaker why he wanted to withdraw the bill.
Mr Edun informed him that a broad consultation was required before proceeding with the motion.
