Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, has announced the start of the implementation of the new National Teaching Policy.
Adamu, who was represented by the ministry's permanent secretary, David Adejo, made the remarks on Monday at a news conference in Abuja to mark the 2022 World Teachers Day.
"I must state right now that national implementation of the New National Teaching Policy has begun," he said.
"It is a comprehensive package that will ultimately address the career path, remuneration, professional teaching standards, qualification, deployment, and management of teachers," he explained.
The minister, who stated that implementation had begun at the national level, urged states to also ensure policy implementation.
Mr Adamu stated that there was a need to assess teachers' indispensable role in nation-building and the importance of repositioning the profession for the attainment and sustainability of quality education.
He stated that the theme emphasized the importance of empowering teachers for effective educational transformation.
"The ministry began with a nationwide call for nomination instruments to state Ministries of Education and Federal Unity Colleges for the selection of deserving nominees."
"The champions will then compete for National Best School, Best Teacher, and Best School Administrator in the categories of Public, Private, and Federal Unity Colleges."
"I would like to take this opportunity to further implore state education ministries to be inclusive in their nominations by ensuring that the process begins at the global level."
"Each Local Government is expected to send their best candidates to the respective state ministry of education for screening," he explained.
In addition, Audu Amba, the president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), praised President Muhammadu Buhari for maintaining the President's Teachers and Schools Excellence Award (PTSEA).
He stated that it had given teachers hope and promoted the dignity of the teaching profession.
Mr Amba, who was represented by Stephen Khabayi, chairman of the NUT's FCT chapter, stated that the celebration aimed to draw public attention to the support teachers require in order to fully contribute to educational transformation.
