World Youth Skill Day: You need to get an entrepreneurial skill - Prof. Yunus Dauda

Professor Yunus Dauda the Chief Executive Officer of Decent Work Labour and Skill Development Institute (DWLSDI) celebrated World Youth Skill Day, on 15 July 2022 at Akingbile  Ibadan.


During the ceremony, he advised the youths to engage in entrepreneurship and skill development to prepare them for future challenges.


He emphasized the need for the youths to come for training in different skills at the centre in other to be gainfully employed after they graduated from schools, colleges and universities.


Stating further that mass unemployment had created many social and economic problems and had aggravated insecurity and crisis in the nation.


The United Nations UN declared In 2014, 15 July as World Youth Skills Day, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.


This year’s celebration was amid joint efforts towards socio-economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that are interrelated with challenges such as climate change, conflict, persisting poverty, rising inequality, rapid technological change, demographic transition and others. Which has resulted in unemployment and inflation around the world.


"DWLSDI is to provide literacy education and training for the artisans, craft people and technicians to improve their skills for decent work and living. And to form a micro-investment capacity of individual and group,” Prof. Dauda said.


World Youth Skills Day has provided a unique avenue “for dialogue between young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, firms, employers’ and workers’ organizations, policy-makers and development partners.”


He said he was challenged to set up this institution from his experience in Germany, where more attention is on skill acquisition and youth development, with formal education.


“Germany is one of the most developed economies today that had benefited most from skill and technical education with their formal education and that is why there is enough job there.


DWLSDI trains artisans on how to improve their skills. improve youth and workers productivity, entrepreneurial, technical and professional skills. Promote youth welfare, provide training for youths self-employment and entrepreneurship,  youth education," he said.


DWLSDI was established by Professor Yunus Dauda, a Professor of Industrial relations and personnel management in 2014, as a community service to contribute to youth development. Several projects have been done to equip youths.


The institution currently has about 10 youth corps members training for various skills in the centre, part of the programmes that was done was a seminar where technical experts were invited to train the youths on how to improve their vocation.


DWLSDI is celebrating this day for the first time, that is why it is not elaborate. Prof. Dauda promised that the institution will celebrate the day better next year.


He advised The government to provide enabling environment for the youths and suggested the government provides capital for the youths with skills to establish themselves after their higher institution.


DWLSDI is youth empowerment and human development institution for improving work and youth wellbeing, skill development and organisational improved performance.


DWLSDI provides methods and strategies to improve income and engage unemployed youths. The institution also provides training on carpentry and joinery, spray painting, painting, sign-writing and artwork, Bricklaying and masonry, pipe fitting and plumbing works, auto electric work, motor vehicle mechanical work, panel beating, welding and iron bending, computer networking and maintenance and electric wiring and Fittings etc.
